Passing of CARH Co-Founder Herb Collins

CARH’S BROADCAST E-MAIL

April 1, 2019

It is with great sadness that we notify you of the passing of Herb Collins, co-founder of Boston Capital and of CARH.

Herb passed away peacefully on March 30. Herb co-founded Boston Capital, Inc. in 1974 building it into one of the nation’s top real estate investment firms. In addition to the success of Boston Capital, Herb proved visionary on an industry-wide basis. Herb pioneered and ultimately helped sustain a new industry in low-income affordable housing. Championing this cause became Herb’s enduring professional legacy.

In 1980, Herb co-founded and was the first President of CARH. Herb was instrumental in convincing Congress to pass the Low Income Tax Credit program into law in 1986, and pressing for legislation to make it permanent in 1993. He later successfully led the fight to prevent the program from being phased out. Even after his retirement from Boston Capital, Herb continued to work on programs and initiatives that advanced affordable housing, particularly in rural areas across the country.

Herb’s funeral mass will be held Thursday, April 4, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at the Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, 142 Prospect Street, Gloucester, Massachusetts. A reception will follow at Cruiseport Gloucester, 6 Rowe Square, Gloucester, Massachusetts. A private burial will be held after the reception for immediate and extended family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Herb’s memory to the YMCA of the North Shore, 245 Cabot Street, Beverly, Massachusetts 01915.  For online condolences, please click here

Our thoughts and prayers are with Herb’s family and colleagues at Boston Capital, Inc.
