Congress to Vote on Stopgap Measure to Avoid Shutdown

In November, the President signed into law H.R. 2775, the Continuing Resolution Act, 2014 which re-opened the federal government after 16 days of shutdown and continued funding of programs through January 15, 2014. Appropriators are currently working on an Omnibus Appropriations bill with a top-line spending level of $1.012 trillion, based on the two-year budget deal Congress approved last month. The budget agreement reached in December only set functional totals for the government. Thus, Congress must still pass a the Omnibus bill that will provide funding for programs beyond next week.
However, the Omnibus bill is not expected to be considered and passed by the January 15th deadline. Therefore, the House will vote early next week on a three-day stopgap spending bill to prevent a government shutdown and to provide extra time to finish the Omnibus bill. The stopgap will extend current spending, which is based on a $987 billion annual budget for discretionary spending, through January 18th.
On a related note, on January 6th , CARH sent a letter to Senators Mark Pryor (D-AR) and Roy Blunt (R-MO), Chair and Ranking Member, respectively, of the Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies, Senate Appropriations Committee and to Representatives Robert Aderholt (R-AL) and Sam Farr (D-CA), Chair and Ranking Member, respectively, of the Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies, House Appropriations Committee. In the letter, CARH urged for the adequate funding of housing programs within Rural Development for Fiscal Year 2014. Click here for a copy of the letter.
