CARH to Attend Senate Democratic Rural Summit

Tanya Eastwood, CARH President and Managing Director of Greystone Affordable Housing Initiatives, and Colleen Fisher, CARH Executive Director, will be attending the Senate Democratic Rural Summit on Wednesday, June 29. The Summit will be held on Capitol Hill in the Dirksen Senate Office Building.
The Senate Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee is dedicated to fostering dialogue between Senate Democrats and leaders from across the nation. Each year, the Steering Committee hosts numerous meetings with advocates, policy experts, and elected officials to discuss key priorities and enlist their help in the development of the Senate Democratic agenda. The Committee serves as a liaison between Senate Democratic offices, advocacy groups, and intergovernmental organizations. It is one of two Democratic Leadership Committees in the Senate and is chaired by Senator Amy Klobuchar (MN) and vice chaired by Senator Jeanne Shaheen (NH).
Wednesday’s Rural Summit’s theme is “Fostering the Next Generation of Rural America” and will feature opening remarks from Senator Klobuchar, Steering and Outreach Committee Chair; Senator Harry Reid (NY), Democratic Leader; Senator Richard Durbin (IL), Assistant Democratic Leader; Senator Charles Schumer (NY), Vice Chairman of the Democratic Conference; and Senator Debbie Stabenow (MI), Ranking, Agriculture Committee.
The Keynote Speaker will be Tom Vilsack, Secretary, U.S. Department of Agriculture. The summit will hold two panels:
- Economic Challenges and Solutions for Rural America — A discussion about rural poverty and access to critical services. Moderators: Senator Joe Donnelly (IN), Rural Summit Co-Chair, and Doug O’Brien, Executive Director, White House Rural Council. Lead Participant: Senator Joe Manchin (WV), Co-Chair, Senate Prescription Drug Abuse Caucus
- Investment Opportunities in Rural America — A discussion about the economic potential in agriculture, energy, and infrastructure. Moderators: Senator Heidi Heitkamp (ND), Rural Outreach Chair, and Senator Jon Tester (MT), Member, Senate Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee. Lead Participant: Lisa Mensah, Under Secretary of Rural Development, S. Department of Agriculture
